Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example the power of art as an activist vehicle. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
